THROW PIES AT TEACHERS

GLASSBORO –Nothing’s better than throwing pies at your teacher on the last week of school.  And for fourth through sixth grade students at Glassboro’s Thomas E. Bowe School, that’s exactly what they got to do as a reward for achieving their spring academic progress goals.

The entire student body was challenged by teacher Michael Sharkey to reach their academic progress goals this spring, and promised the chance to throw pies as the reward. 

Amid throngs of their screaming classmates, 30 students with the highest achievement levels lined up last Tuesday in the school gym, armed with pies, and let ‘em rip.

Glassboro Schools administered their spring Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing in May and June.  MAP gives all students a projected growth goal based their individual previous testing cycle. 

“Realizing it’s tough for the students to get motivated for tests late in the school year, I decided to create an incentive to help keep them focused throughout the testing cycle and reach their spring goal for MAP,” said Sharkey.  He added that a full 73% of the fourth grade reached their goal, and some were among the youngsters who got to release more than a little bit of steam.
